With a keen interest in and deep knowledge of emerging technological trends in special collections libraries and/or the humanities, the Assistant Director is responsible for developing an integrated digital presence to advance the Library's mission.
The Assistant Director will shape future engagement with the world-renowned research collection of the John Carter Brown Library by enhancing the Library's digital presence and furthering its exploration of digital technologies in a special collections environment. The Library, through the responsibilities integral to this position, seeks to create an online platform through which scholars and curators can connect and contribute many kinds of information, scholarly and otherwise, about digital objects and collections. The Library's materials include books, maps, prints, and manuscript collections from throughout the Americas - North, Central, and South - during the colonial period. Potential constituencies include populations totaling in excess of one billion people. Significant portions of the collection have already been digitized, an effort that continues apace, and the Library has made a commitment to guarantee that all digitized materials are made available for free. - Establish relationships with local and distant experts to determine functionality, design, and accessibility of a flexible user-interface platform relying on underlying apps and services to develop a richer, deeper environment for scholarly engagement with Library resources.
- Develop expertise on underlying apps and services
- Determine costs of implementation; work with senior leadership in allocating necessary resources
- Determine outside (grant) funding sources and prepare grant proposals
2. Develop knowledge about the JCB's collection, its principal and potential constituents, in order to effectively contribute to the development of its strategy for producing digital content:
- Consult with curators and others
- Review published materials about the Library's holdings
- Work with senior leadership to determine priorities in digitizing the collection to best support user engagement
3. Work with others in crafting and implementing a comprehensive digital outreach program for the Library, including use of existing and emerging social media outlets:
- Consult with senior leadership, curators, and outreach staff
- Establish processes for regular, routine communications about the Library's collections; coordinate efforts of other staff (Curator, Public Service Assistants, etc.) in developing and disseminating social media content related to online platform
- Establish and monitor metrics; determine measurements for \"success\"
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's Degree required, Advanced degree (MA, Ph.D.) or equivalent experience in field related to the Library's mission desirable
* 1-3 years of professional experience in implementing, evaluating, and integrating digital media platforms at minimum
* Experience in development of technological infrastructure projects, including knowledge of programming
